Ford.
Ford's Malaysian gearbox story is dominated by one unit: the PowerShift DPS6 dry dual-clutch in the Fiesta and Focus — the subject of lawsuits worldwide and the most notorious dual-clutch ever sold here. Ranger owners have a much happier time with conventional 6- and 10-speed automatics.

What's fitted
| Unit | Type | Found in | Specialist note |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerShift DPS6 | Dual-clutch (dry) | Fiesta, Focus (2011–2018) | Chronic clutch shudder and TCM failures; permanent fixes exist but require the updated parts, not just re-adaptation. |
| 6R80 / 10R80 | Conventional automatic | Ranger, Everest | Strong truck automatics; fluid service and the occasional solenoid are the norm. |
Known failure modes
Fault 01
Shudder and clutch slip (Fiesta/Focus)
The signature DPS6 fault — dry clutches glaze and seals weep onto the friction surfaces. The lasting fix is updated clutch and seal parts together, not a clutch alone.
Fault 02
TCM failure (DPS6)
Loss of drive or gear hunting from a failed transmission control module — a documented, replaceable item.
Fault 03
Ranger harsh shifting
Usually adaptive-learning drift or fluid degradation on hard-worked trucks; a service and relearn typically restores it.
Cost band · Malaysia
RM 400 (diagnosis) to RM 7,000 (DPS6 clutch + TCM + seals)
Exact pricing depends on the diagnosis — see the full 2026 cost guide for how quotes are built and the questions that keep them honest.
Ford owners ask
- 01Is a used Ford Fiesta worth buying given the gearbox?
- Only priced accordingly, and ideally with evidence the updated clutch kit and TCM have already been fitted. Budget for the full fix if not — then the car itself is genuinely good.
